PUERTO RICO TO HOST 2023 PREDATOR WPA WORLD TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2023 Predator WPA World Teams Championship will be played at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan from November 8-12, with $300,000 on the line in prize money, and $120,000 for the winning team.

The 10-ball event, won in Austria by Team Philippines last year, is part of the Puerto Rico Billiards Expo, which attracted over 1,000 players and 8,500 fans from over 40 different countries for its first staging in 2022.

The Expo begins on November 7 with the Pro Billiard Series Medalla Light Puerto Rico Men’s and Women’s Opens and the CSI Leagues Caribbean Championships. In total, half a million dollars will be paid in prize money to pro players competing in the events.

The Predator WPA World Teams Championship contributes $300,000 to that total, representing an increase of more than double last year’s prize fund. The winning team will take $120,000.

16 teams from around the world will represent their country at the event. Teams are comprised of at least two males and one female player. Teams can register up to five players (three male and two female) for the event, but only three players will take part in each round.

Each match is a best-of-5 sets, race to 4 per set. The first four sets are one mixed doubles and three singles matches. The fifth set is a shootout with all three players shooting in rotation.

Johann Chua was a member of the Philipinnes team who defeated Great Britain in last year’s final. He said: “Winning World teams felt surreal. It was my first world title and it was such an honor to win it with Rubilen Amit and Carlo Biado. With all the talented pool athletes we have, it was a privilege to be part of the team, showcase my skills and represent our country with the best of my abilities. This year, we’re strongly aiming to defend our title hoping to win it again.”

Chua’s team-mate Biado has already experienced what it feels like to win in San Juan. The 2022 Medalla Light Puerto Rico Open champion said: “Representing the Philippines is one of the greatest feelings you can even imagine. A lot of Filipinos are cheering for us all over the world and it’s really really the best feeling.”
